CAT
CAT stands for Computer Aided Translation which helps to consistently translate your documents using the same set terminology. The translator uses a computer program which stores all earlier translations in its TM (translation memory) and suggests specific terms and phrases from its database to the translator if it detects them in the current document. The program also enables the creation and utilisation of terminological dictionaries for individual clients. Both translation and proofreading are performed personally by the translator or proofreader, however, CAT applications assist in searching for terms and phrases which have already been used in prior documents.
This type of translation is suitable for texts and documents showing a high degree of similarity in the long-term (manuals, certificates, technical specifications, safety data sheets etc.). Our company uses SDL Trados 2007, 2009, 2011, SDLX, Across, Wordfast, Transit XV, Déjà Vu, Helium, LocStudio etc..
